Hatari Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania
The former home of German movie star Hardy Krueger has a location to die for, with breathtaking views of Mt Meru and is regularly visited by buffalo, giraffe and warthogs. The design is quirky and the safaris organized by the lodge lead into the lesser known West-Kilimanjaro area, famous for its huge elephant bulls coming over from Amboseli. The lodge can and should be booked in conjunction with its sister camp, Sh’umata.

Chole Mjini, Mafia Island, Tanzania
This lodge is located in a marine sanctuary and is by no means your average accommodation. Think of barefoot luxury with the romantic backdrop of overgrown ruins in a jungle setting. Guests sleep in open tree houses wrapped around baobab trees, eat the superb seafood wherever they want and with a bit of luck watch turtles hatching on nearby Juani island. The diving is superb with healthy reefs and a stunning number of fish species.

Alex Walker’s Serian Camps, Tanzania & Kenya
This is luxurious bush camping as its best. Comfortable beds, glorious food and guides who know the area and animal behaviour so well, they will lead you to the best spots for wildlife viewing away from the crowds. The Serengeti North Camp is a seasonal camp and follows the migration. For families or honeymooners there is a separate tent with private 4×4, private guide and own mess tent.

Rubondo Island, Victoria Lake, Tanzania
This new luxury camp on what is the largest island national park in Africa is for explorers and nature lovers. Although the stars are the wild chimpanzees, there are many rare and endemic species to be found in the island forest. The fishing is highly rewarding, but the lodge is also great for just relaxing after a week on safari. Transfer is by boat (somewhat adventurous) or better by plane from Mwanza.

Legendary Coffee Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania
Arguably the best lodge in Arusha, this is the perfect spot to rest before or after safari or climbing Kilimanjaro. The chalets have their own living area with a fireplace (it can get cold in Arusha in June and July so you will be thankful for it), a large, very comfy bed and a bathroom the size of many hotel rooms in Arusha. The cooking is very refined, think of home made ice cream with warm apple crumble on top for dessert. This is also a place for wine lovers with an eclectic selection in the main house and a very good wine in your mini bar.

Kiota Nest, Arusha, Tanzania
The house under Swiss management can be rented as a whole – ideal for family gatherings – or per room. The decades your hostess spent in Africa have found their way onto the walls and into the guest rooms as distinctively African décor. Being independent from the Tanzanian power-network with its solar panels it is also a great place for bird lovers with many rare species to be seen right around the house.

Lake Duluti Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania
This boutique luxury lodge close to Arusha will warm the hearts of all those who have an eye for style and ambience. Think of private chalets with free standing oval bath tub, dark wood and a spacious walk-in rain shower. The food is refined and ideal for those who want to follow a healthy diet. The staff is attentive and will make you stay a highly memorable experience.
