In Kiswahili, the name Bagamoyo means “bury my heart”. This is because it was the penultimate stop for slave caravans from the interior on their way to Zanzibar. There is a small museum with information, photos, etc. about Livingstone and Stanley.
Approximately 5 km south of Bagamoyo lies the town f Kaole, which contains ancient tombs and ruins of an Arab town dating back to the 13th century.
Places worth visiting in the “Haven of Peace” include Nyerere Cultural Centre where over 100 artists and artisans can be seen at work and the bustling Kariakoo market with its surrounding bazaar. Nearby beaches include Oyster Bay, Kunduchi, Jangwani, Bahari and Armani.
Originally a center for the gold trade, Kilwa is now a World Heritage site. Many ancient ruins can be viewed on the offshore island of Kilwa Kisiwani.
Tanzania’s first marine park has approximately 400 species of fish and 5 species of turtle; Mafia offers many excellent diving and fishing areas. The rare dugong breeds in the Mafia Channel, where sports fisherman gather between September and March for its renowned big-game fishing.
Located on Tanzania’s southernmost coast, Kikandani town was the starting point for Livingstone’s final journey. The Ruvuma River and Mnazi Bay Marine Reserve are nearby.
Beach resorts are springing up along the coastline of Pangani village, once the major port for export of ivory and slaves. Try deep-sea fishing, snorkeling at Maziwe Island Marine Reserve or just relax on Ushongo Beach.
White sand beaches at this peaceful retreat to the south of Dar es Salaam make Ras Kutani the perfect place for rest and relaxation. Swim and sunbathe to your heart’s content.
This river represents Tanzania’s border with Mozambique and, together with Mnazi Bay, forms one of the country’s new marine sanctuaries. Crocs and hippo live in the river.
Located on the Indian Ocean, north of Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo, Saadani cover 1,000 sq km and is Tanzania’s only coastal National Park. Here you can see lion and elephant footprints on the pristine beach.
Famous for its limetone Amboni Caves, Tanga is Tanzania’s second major port and a short drive from Amani Nature Reserve.
