This morning, we collect you from your Arusha or Moshi hotel and drive to Umbwe Gate for the start of this challenging climb. Today you will hike for 6-7 hours on a steep, rough trail through the rainforest to reach your wooded campsite at Umbwe Caves.
Rise with the sun for another day of invigorating, high-altitude trekking. The trail ascends through the forest and edges along a thin ridgeline along sheer cliff-tops. A hike of 6-7 hours will bring you to Barranco Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Take time to admire the beauty of this amazing route before setting off on the steep descent into Barranco Valley and climbing up the almost vertical Barranco Wall. Absorb the stillness around you on this matchless 4 -5 hour trek, overlooked by Kibo’s luminous glaciers and Mawenzi’s proud, jagged peak.
During this 5-6 hour hike, temperatures drop and the landscape grows more barren. The trail winds steadily uphill towards Barafu Camp – your base for the coming midnight assault on Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Watch your feet on this dark, hard scramble up the scree slopes towards Gilman’s Point, and stay close to your guides during the next 2 -3 hours, as you hike along the lip of the rocky, icy crater to your goal – Uhuru Peak. You are now standing on the rooftop of Africa, among sparkling glaciers and ice cliffs in the bright, early morning light. Capture a tremendous sense of achievement and return the smiles of your guides before embarking on the relatively easy descent to Mweka Camp where you can, at last, relax, rest and celebrate your triumph.
The descent to Mweka Gate can take anything from 2 to 5 hours, depending on weather conditions; rain can occur at any time at this elevation and a muddy trail will slow you down. Your driver will wait, so take your time as you say goodbye to Kilimanjaro – your mountain, your attainment!
